Weekly Update – June 30, 2020

Still no movement on the ACX front, sad to say. The audiobook version of The Adventures of Strongarm & Lightfoot – Blades of Glory remains in limbo for the present, despite my noodging.

On another note, my friend Lyndsey Luthor is taking the plunge into indie authorship and plans to release her first fantasy novel, Greencloak, soon-ish. Last week she launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the audiobook production, and she killed it right out of the gate. So, congratulations!

But there’s still a month or so to go in this campaign and she has some stretch goals she’d like to hit, so I’d like you all to go over to the Kickstarter project page, give it a look, and if you like what you see, contribute!

Weekly Update – June 23, 2020

Oh, ACX…

So, a bit of background for those unfamiliar with the audiobook creation process. It goes a little like this: I send an annotated (with pronunciations, mostly) “reading copy” of the novel to my narrator; she records the audio a chapter at a time; I review the “first draft” audio and send her any notes or corrections; she fixes the issues; I review it again; and once everything is up to snuff, I submit the whole thing to ACX so it meets their audio quality standards.

That very last part of the process is supposed to take six to ten business days.

The audio review for The Adventures of Strongarm & Lightfoot – Sworded Affairs has been in review since May 11, with no reason given for the delay.

I’ve contacted ACX to try and get this moving, but aside from one auto-response e-mail, it’s still stalled.

For those of you who’ve been waiting for this audiobook, sorry for the delay. Hopefully this will get resolved soon.

Also: I’m hosting another Online Writers’ Virtual Coffeehouse this Thursday. It’s open to all writers regardless of experience or interests. Check out the Facebook event page for details.

Weekly Update – June 16, 2020

Draft one of Action Figures – Issue Ten: Unintended Consequences is done!

The first draft clocks in at 80,000+ words, making it a strong contender for the longest Action Figures novel, but I’m expecting to shave a LOT of material out in subsequent drafts. It always happens because of my tendency to greatly over-write in early drafts.

That comes later, though. I’m putting this project aside to cool off for a while and moving on to the first draft of the next Strongarm & Lightfoot book.

Weekly Update – June 9, 2020

First, I’d like to remind everyone that I am hosting an “online writers’ virtual coffeehouse” on Thursday at 7:30 PM (EST), where I and other participants will discuss a wide range of writing- and publishing-related topics, from the writing process to marketing and promotions. If you’re a writer — of any kind, of any experience or interest level — you can learn more about it at my Facebook page. Go there and click on the “events” tab.

The big productive news this week is that I wrote and submitted a short story for an upcoming anthology to be published by the Superhero Fiction group. The theme is superhero romance, and fortunately, I had a concept for a pulp hero story lying around waiting to be used. I was able to write in up, get it out to beta-readers, and put the final polish on it within a week, so now I get to wait to hear whether it’s been accepted.

I’d love to get in on this anthology, but I promise that if it doesn’t make it, I’ll publish it for everyone to enjoy in some fashion.

Side note: the story was originally intended for a pulp hero anthology, but I ended up passing on that because the publisher wasn’t going to pay the contributors. Any revenue generated by sales would belong to the publisher to fund his own small press. Uh, no.

That leads me to today’s word of advice: if an anthology doesn’t offer the contributors some kind of financial compensation, avoid it — especially if the publisher plans to also hold onto the rights to your submission for an unreasonable length of time. The one possible exception is if the anthology is a fundraiser for charitable purposes, but if the publisher isn’t going to share the wealth with the writers? Hard pass.

Weekly Update – August 2, 2016

WRITING PROJECTS

The Adventures of Strongarm & Lightfoot – Assassins Brawl: With my editor, still on-track for a September release.

Action Figures – Issue Six: Power Play: Pre-editing revisions are done, in the queue for editing.

Action Figures – Live Free or Die: Pre-editing revisions are done, in the queue for editing.

Action Figures – Issue Seven: The Black End War: Got some more done on this, and I’m building toward the mid-point scene, which will be a big one.

Action Figures – Issue Eight: Did quite a bit on this over the weekend. I know, working concurrently on two books is odd, and putting more into the later book in the series seems counterproductive, but books seven and eight have some overlap, just like six and seven did, so jumping back and forth is really the best way to ensure that the stories mesh.

Action Figures – Issue One: Secret Origins:  Audiobook recording in process.

MISC.

Lots of miscellaneous this week!

I received my DVD copy of my interview from Upton Community TV and watched it with a kind of morbid fascination. Seeing myself on TV was just plain weird and awkward, but it was a good interview. It hasn’t aired yet and I haven’t taken the time to try and upload the video myself, so be patient. I will subject myself to your scrutiny soon enough.

I had my show last week, and to cut a long story short, it was a mixed bag. I met some cool people, did some networking, and met Mike Girard, lead singer for one of my all-time favorite bands, The Fools. That alone made it great night, but from a pragmatic (read: monetary) standpoint, the day was a bust. The lesson I am learning is that I do better at shows that specifically cater to the geek crowd.

Joshuas Island CoverFinally, I’d like to give a shout-out to fellow author Patrick Hodges, creator of the James Madison series. Patrick came across Action Figures and loved book one so much he felt compelled to contact me. We talked shop a bit over the weekend, he introduced me to a YA writers’ group online, and he’s sending me a copy of his first book to check out. I recommend you all do the same!
