WRITING PROJECTS

Well-Behaved Women: Big announcement! Darci Cole has signed on to be the narrator for the audiobook version of Well-Behaved Women – Awakening. Darci has narrated the audiobook version of Coldness of Marek by Rachel O’Laughlin and she’s agreed to tackle the entire WBW trilogy.

The Going Rate for Penance – Editing phase complete, on-track for a February 2019 release.

The Adventures of Strongarm & Lightfoot – Scratching a LichHeather S. Auden: And guess what? has agreed to narrate an audiobook version of the first S&L book! She auditioned for WBW but, after lengthy self-debate, didn’t feel like quite the right fit for that project, but having worked with her before at the Connecticut Renaissance Faire and witnessing her flair for ace comedic delivery, I thought she’d be a great fit for an S&L audiobook.

The Adventures of Strongarm & Lightfoot – book four: First draft in progress.

Action Figures – Issue EightCrawling from the Wreckage: Fourth draft written. Tentatively scheduled for a February/March 2019 release.

Action Figures – Issue Nine: Hell Hath No Fury: First draft in progress.

Weekly Update – September 11, 2018

Got plans for this weekend? No?

Then come check out the Connecticut Renaissance Faire in Lebanon, CT! It’s Fantasy & Romance Weekend this weekend, which will feature a wedding vow renewal ceremony on Saturday and a fantasy creature costume contest on Sunday, along with great shows throughout the day both days.

And, as if you needed another reason to go, I’m the featured guest author on Saturday! This will be the big debut for the print edition of Well-Behaved Women – Awakening, and I’ll of course have copies of Action Figures, The Adventures of Strongarm & Lightfoot, and Cheap Thrills Digest available.

You can find the author nook in the shady lane area, which is to your right upon entering the faire site. It’s down on the left near the Shady Emporium. I’ll have a table set up all day, and between 1 and 2:30 PM I’ll be there to sign books and meet fans. Other than that, I’ll be running around portraying General Gaspard de Saulx as part of the show’s main scenario.

In other time-sensitive news, this is your final week to grab the Heroes & Villains superhero novel box set!

The e-book set includes Action Figures – Issue One: Secret Origins and will be available through September. This collection also includes Hero Status by Kristen Brand, Super by Karen Diem, Morning Sun by Jeremy Flagg, Supervillain High by Gerhard Gehrke, Wearing the Cape by Marion G. Well-Behaved Women: Work on draft one of book three is moving along nicely, and I am creeping toward the climax. I’ve passed the 56,000 word mark, and I suspect I will be adding a lot of material to draft two to expand the story. I’ve also put the call out for narrators for an audiobook version of Awakening, which I plan to have out by the start of the holiday shopping season.

The Going Rate for Penance – Editing phase complete, on-track for a February 2019 release.

Action Figures – Issue One: Secret Origins (audiobook): Review completed, final editing in progress.

Well-Behaved Women – Awakening — Now Available!

Cover reveal time! Behold, the front and back covers for Well-Behaved Women – Awakening!

Cover design copyright 2018 Patricia Lupien. Photographs copyright 2018 Lauren Dubois.

That of course means the book is now available! It’s already up on Amazon and will be going up on Barnes & Noble and Kobo soon.

Now, let me tell you the story about how this cover came together.

I came up with a concept back in December 2017, inspired by the triptych covers from DC’s Trinity series.

Copyright DC. Art by Jim Lee.

Yeah, I wanted something cool like that. And my idea was to feature the three main characters — Rose, Julie, and Anne — in their modern and original incarnations (that will make sense once you read the book). This is what I sketched out as a concept rough:

Copyright and art (reluctantly) 2018 Michael Bailey.

I recruited models Jen MacPherson, Kateri Chambers, and Renee Sutherland to be my Rose, Julie, and Anne respectively, and we did a daylong photo shoot at my place (briefly documented here).

Tricia Lupien, my crack cover artist, took those photos and got to work.

This is when the first in a series of happy accidents began.

The first thing Tricia produced was a series of cameo-style graphics — the character’s profiles in silhouette — she’d originally intended to put on the spines somewhere. I took those and started toying around with some promotional graphic concepts, and came up with this series of images:

I had no idea how useful these would become.

Meanwhile, Tricia forged ahead with the covers and came up with this, which employed my color scheme and cameo:

Artwork copyright 2018 Patricia Lupien.

My original concept would have had Rose in her original incarnation, rendered as a painting or illustration, behind modern Rose. Tricia got as far as actually creating that version (at right) when she decided that the entire concept wasn’t working — and I had to agree. It all sounded fantastic on paper, but once we got into the actual creation process, we realized its flaws and made the tough decision to start over almost completely.

Almost.

Thanks to my experimentation with promo graphics, we actually had a promising basis for a totally new concept, so Tricia springboarded off of that, and within a day or two she had the brand-new and MUCH more awesome cover you saw at the top of this post.

Addendum: we love the illustrated version of Rose and don’t want her to go to waste, so she’ll be popping up on some promo materials down the road.

WRITING PROJECTS

Well-Behaved Women: Last week was brutal — for the characters. I tackled a major action sequence which resulted in several casualties that will propel the climactic third act.

The Going Rate for Penance – The editing phase has wrapped up, so now the anthology is heading into its final phases. We’ve lined up a special mystery guest to handle blurb-writing responsibilities, and then it’s a matter of formatting the book, submitting our author bios, and prepping some promotional campaigns.
